Hence the criticism. Nothing to do with race.

'In his position, he's by far and away the most form player.'

Yeah, pick 'em to see if they're up to it. But Sterling has 44 caps and 2 goals. He's 2 1/2 times worse than Emile Heskey. Or 150% rubbishier, if you prefer.

Comma, he can clearly do it as he does at City.

He is a very frustrating player but I wouldn't not play him.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
If you look at the chances Sterling missed it is likely we would have wrapped a couple of games up, the Columbia game being an example.

We want Sterling to take a reasonable number of the chances created but he snatches at the ball too often. In one WC match Sterling was in a better goal scoring position than Kane but our captain opted to take the chance probably figuring that Sterling would make a hash of it.

It frustrates most of us that Sterling has everything except the ability to coolly finish.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
There's no question that the 'meedja' are focussing an undue level of spiteful and vindictive attention toward Raheem Stirling, especially The Sun, however the argument of racism could only work if either Raheem Stirling was the only African footballer working in the UK, or they were giving equally as much attention to all the African players.

All media has their agendas, however throwing all their weight into attacking a single overhyped underperforming footballer would be the strangest way to enact your agenda if "racism" was its sole drive.

Why not focus on black overrepresentation in violent crimes etc if that was the true agenda?

It's quite likely Stirling has upset someone influential connected to these papers and being used as a whipping boy, only even worse overhyped and underperforming average footballers from Africa playing in the UK seem to get a free pass.

It's more a targeted campaign of harassment against the individual Raheem Stirling, unless you think all blacks look like Raheem Stirling, which is nonsense as we all know as some of them have Adidas lines shaved into their eyebrows and look completely different as a result.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
What makes me laugh is that people slagging off Sterling are ones who kept on saying we should be picking players based on form for their clubs.

In his position, he's by far and away the most form player.

Whilst he misses a fuck load, his work rate and ability to get into threatening positions also opens the door for others.

It was a no brainer he was picked for England ahead of Rashford.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
For me I wanted Rashford to be given an opportunity an opportunity and Oxlade Chamberlain had he not been injured for the WC. My thoughts on Sterling have nothing to do with the colour of his skin and everything to do with the sheer frustration of putting my head in my hands every time he missed a sitter or lost the ball in a promising position.

Even at Man City Sterling is guilty of missing some absolute sitters, but unlike England Man City create a bucket load of chances so those misses don't matter so much and he gets plenty more chances to score. I remember seeing a STAT on Sky Sports at the end of the season and Sterling's goals to chances percentage was really low

Yes he is a constant threat but goals win games and missing a sitter will be remembered more by people watching than a bunch of exciting forward runs that put the opposition on the back foot but which ultimately ended in nothing.

Some of these are over the top but there's enough in there to suggest some kind of agenda wouldn't you think?

He looked very good against Arsenal on Sunday. A proper danger in and around the box. But a bit like Antonio, you are never quite sure what will happen when he gets the ball.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
What is happening on this thread is a demonstration of the aftermath of someone playing the race card. So instead of facing up to the fact that a player has underperformed ( which nobody is denying ) the conversation is basically would a white boy be getting less criticism. And my answer is no because have we all forgotten about the vast level of criticism Rooney was getting towards the end of his England career?

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
If people think the criticism chucked at Sterling's appearance was based on his race, then thank god the mongy looking golden boot winner Kane is white. Otherwise they'd be shitting the bed.

Without question the most hammered ever England player is Carlton Palmer. And that was fuck all to do with the colour of his skin either. And the next most was Peter Bonetti.

Re: Raheem Sterling: Manchester City winger is targeted by racism, says Ian Wright
Was the out-pouring of outrage for his gun tattoo racist? No. I dont think it was. In times when kids are stabbing each other on a weekly basis, and people getting shot is a such a regular occurance that it barely makes you surprised, his choice of tattoo, and its timing (days before the WC) was very poor.

His explanation was that his Dad was shot dead as a kid. Im sure theres a hundred different ways to honour him suitably, but having his murder weapon tattoo'd on his calf muscle a few days before the start of the biggest competition in world football was ridiculous. He deserved all the abuse he got for that, and it had nothing to do with the colour of his skin.

His performances at the WC were very poor. In the first game against Tunisia he had a ball played square to him, from about 15 yards away by Kieren Trippier. The pass took the keeper out the game, and all Sterling had to do was side foot it into an empty net.

Baring in mind the pass came from a good 15 yards away, he had plenty of time to sort his feet out and compose himself. The ball bounced 10 yards wide off his shin. He deserves all the abuse he gets for his poor showing in the WC, and its not because of the colour of his shin.
